CHPC Director, 2014–2025

We are pleased to welcome Dr. William L. Miller as the new Senior Director for Research Computing and Data at the Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute and the CHPC. Dr. Miller joins us following his leadership role at the National Science Foundation as Senior Advisor for Cyberinfrastructure. He brings long experience with the development and oversight of large-scale experimental, observational, and computational research infrastructure across many scientific fields, a prior career in experimental neuroscience, and a strong vision for the future of research computing and data at the University of Utah.

A note from Bill:

I am very excited to begin this new leadership role at the U of U and look forward to working with my stellar CHPC colleagues to continue and grow the University's support for cutting-edge computational research and innovation across campus, the state and regionally.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my predecessor, Prof. Thomas Cheatham, for his leadership as Director of the Center for High Performance Computing from 2014–2025. Tom's vision, dedication, and deep expertise shaped CHPC into a highly performant organization with a focused mission to serve the computational needs of a broad range of scientific users. I know that the computational research community that we serve at the U will continue to benefit from Tom's scientific and technical expertise as he returns full-time to his tenured position in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry in the College of Pharmacy and he continues his significant presence on the national stage through the Campus Research Computing Consortium and other venues.

I have been at the U only a few short weeks — getting up to speed on the complex workings of CHPC and SCI. I am just starting to get to know our user community and stakeholders, their needs and perspectives. So please feel free to reach out at [email protected] and we'll find a time to chat!
